J. Matthews, Intern Therapist
J. (they/them) is a master’s level intern therapist who works with individuals and couples who feel stuck in painful patterns — whether that shows up as recurring conflict, emotional distance, difficulty trusting, or feeling disconnected from themselves or their partner. Many of the people J. works with want deeper closeness and understanding, but aren’t sure how to get there.
J.’s work is grounded in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and an attachment-based approach that focuses on helping people understand their emotions, soften protective patterns, and create more secure, responsive connections. Their style is warm, collaborative, and rooted in the belief that healing happens through relationship.
They support clients with concerns such as trauma, life transitions, identity exploration, relationship challenges, and personal growth, and they integrate trauma-informed care, mindfulness, and holistic practices to meet people where they are. In therapy, J. meets you with curiosity and care, helping you explore what’s happening beneath the surface of your emotions and relationships so that meaningful, lasting change can happen.
As a queer, non-binary, and biracial person, J. brings lived experience into their work and is especially passionate about supporting people who are navigating questions of identity, belonging, non-traditional relationship structures, and providing LGBTQ+ affirming care. They also work with clients from many backgrounds and walks of life, and strive to create a space where people feel safe, respected, and free to show up as they are.
Before beginning clinical training, J. spent over eight years working in crisis response, group facilitation, conflict resolution, and coaching. These experiences continue to shape their steady, compassionate presence with clients during difficult or transformative moments.
Outside the therapy room, J. enjoys spending time with family and friends, making and listening to music, being outdoors, and curling up with a good book or a cup of coffee.
