LGBTQ+ Therapy
LGBTQ+ people seek therapy for many of the same reasons anyone does — anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, and questions of meaning or identity. Yet, the experience of these struggles can be deeply shaped by sexuality, gender, and the broader social context. You deserve a therapist who not only understands but celebrates queerness — who can hold both its challenges and its beauty.
Do you want a therapist who truly understands and affirms your sexuality and gender identity?
Are you experiencing challenges in a queer relationship and want support navigating them?
Are you exploring your sexuality or gender identity and seeking a safe, affirming space to do so?

Mental Health in the LGBTQ+ Community
Research consistently shows that LGBTQ+ adults and young adults experience depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation at much higher rates than their heterosexual and cisgender peers. At Colorado Therapy Collective, we understand that these mental health disparities do not stem from queerness itself, but from living in a world that still centers heterosexuality and cisnormativity. Stigma, discrimination, and social isolation can take a real toll — and therapy can be a place to begin healing from those wounds.
At the same time, queer communities have always found ways to cultivate joy, resilience, and connection. Queer people have always existed — and have always found ways to thrive. We honor that legacy of strength and believe that you, too, can move toward a life that feels grounded, authentic, and full of possibility.
Whether you’re seeking support in a queer partnership or simply want to live with greater ease and self-acceptance, we’re here to help you get there.
Our Approach to Supporting LGBTQ+ Clients
At Colorado Therapy Collective, we take an attachment-focused, humanistic, and strengths-based approach to therapy. We honor the ways early relationships shape our emotional world, and the ongoing importance of feeling safe, seen, and connected in the present.
For us, attachment extends beyond romantic or family relationships — it includes our sense of security within our communities, our society, and even within the natural world.
Some of our therapists identify as LGBTQ+ themselves, and all are explicitly LGBTQ+ affirming — it’s a requirement to work at CTC. Our team meets regularly for consultation and training on culturally responsive care, adapting traditional therapeutic frameworks (often built around dominant identities) to better serve clients with marginalized identities, including those related to sexuality, gender, race, neurodivergence, and more.
While diagnosis can be a useful tool, we focus first and foremost on seeing you as a whole person — not a set of symptoms or labels. Whether you’re coming to therapy for anxiety relief, trauma recovery, or identity exploration, your CTC therapist will help you understand how past experiences shape your present and support you in creating new, healthier patterns moving forward.
We also recognize that LGBTQIA+ is a broad, beautiful umbrella encompassing many experiences and ways of being. We’ll bring curiosity and compassion to exploring how your intersecting identities and life experiences come together to make you who you are.
Common Areas of Focus with LGBTQ+ Clients
Mixed-orientation relationships
Couples in which one partner is queer or trans and the other is cis and/or straight may face unique dynamics. These relationships are often “straight-passing,” which can bring both a sense of safety and a feeling of invisibility. Therapy can help you navigate these nuances with openness and understanding.
Gender exploration
Whether you experience gender dysphoria, don’t identify with the gender binary, or simply want to deepen your understanding of what gender means to you, we offer a compassionate space to explore these questions safely.
Queer conception and family building
Queer families often encounter unique emotional and logistical challenges when building families. We can help you navigate these experiences with validation, clarity, and care.
Coming out
Whether you’re an adult coming out later in life or a young person sharing your truth for the first time, having an affirming therapist makes a difference. We’ll support you in navigating this process at your own pace and in your own way.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Absolutely. While every therapist at CTC is LGBTQ+ affirming, we understand that shared identity can foster a deeper sense of comfort and understanding. If you’d prefer a therapist who identifies as LGBTQ+, we’ll be happy to connect you with one.
-
No. Conversion therapy — or any approach that attempts to change someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity — is both ineffective and deeply harmful. If you’re struggling with internalized shame or conflict around your identity, we can explore where those beliefs came from and work toward self-acceptance and healing. Being queer is not something that needs to be cured or fixed — it’s something to be embraced.
