Sean Mortenson, LPC

Sean (he/him) is a therapist who works with individuals and couples who feel stuck in patterns that no longer feel sustainable. Many of the people he works with notice themselves withdrawing, shutting down, or turning to coping strategies that create distance in their relationships. Others feel caught in cycles of anxiety and conflict, or find themselves going through the motions of a life that no longer feels meaningful. Many feel alone or unseen in these experiences, which often reinforce a deep sense of isolation.

Sean helps clients slow down and make sense of what’s happening beneath the surface, both within themselves and in their relationships. Together, they explore how past experiences shape the ways clients see the world, respond to stress, and reach for connection. His work is attachment-based and strengths-focused, aimed at helping clients feel more secure, which opens the door to relationships that feel more connected and responsive.

Sean has experience supporting clients with depression, anxiety, existential questions, and major life transitions. He’s also skilled at helping clients work through conflict in relationships and family systems. Sean has particular expertise working with men, especially those navigating midlife, and with clients recovering from high-control religious systems. Ultimately, he welcomes people from all backgrounds and approaches each client with openness, curiosity, and respect for their unique lived experience.

Sean earned his Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Fuller Seminary and is trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), a research-supported, attachment-based approach that helps people recognize the emotional cycles that pull them apart and learn how to create more secure and connected relationships. He also has training in EMDR and Internal Family Systems (IFS), which inform his understanding of how past experiences continue to shape present patterns.

Before becoming a therapist, Sean worked as an architect and later as a pastor. In his transition to therapist, he’s found the role to be a more honest and effective expression of what he desired to do all along, which is meeting people in times of disruption and disillusionment to help them find a meaningful way forward.

Sean is LGBTQIA+ affirming and strives to offer a place of security and support for all people, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, political affiliation, gender expression, sexual identity, or relationship structure.

Outside of the therapy room, Sean enjoys spending time with his wife and four children, traveling, exploring new restaurants, going to concerts and films, working with his hands, and watching the Chicago Cubs.
