Zach Appel, Intern Therapist

Zach (he/him/his) is a master’s level intern therapist who works with couples, families, and individuals who are struggling with feelings of disconnection, relational conflict, lack of purpose, difficulties with communicating, depression and anxiety, and generally feeling planted but unable to properly grow. Many of the people he works with feel frustrated, alone, confused, rejected, on edge, or directionless, even though they care deeply about their relationships and their lives.

Zach helps clients build a life that truly feels like theirs. He supports clients in navigating and changing painful patterns, repairing communication, building self-trust and trust in others, and breaking cycles they often didn’t get a say in. His work focuses on the emotional patterns that shape how people connect, protect themselves, and reach for one another. His work is grounded in an attachment-based, strengths-focused approach that looks not at what’s “wrong” with you, but at how your nervous system and relationships have learned to survive.

He has experience supporting clients with improving communication, self expression, conflict resolution, and self-empowerment when facing life’s challenges. His previous clinical experience in substance addiction treatment settings also informs his understanding of how pain, coping, shame, disconnection, and survival strategies can shape people’s relationships with themselves and others. This background helps him bring compassion and context to clients and loved ones impacted by addiction, recovery, or patterns of coping that no longer feel sustainable.

Zach is especially passionate about working with people in the LGBTQ+ community,  creatives, professionals in all fields, young adults, ethically non-monogamous relationships, and they also welcome people from many backgrounds and walks of life. He believes that culture, identity, and lived experience shape how we love, cope, and  connect — and that honoring those differences can deepen the work.

He earned their Bachelors of Science in psychology from Metropolitan State  University and have clinical experience in substance addiction treatment settings. Zach is trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), a research-supported, attachment-based approach that helps people recognize the emotional cycles that pull them apart and learn how to create more secure, responsive, and loving connections.

Outside of the therapy room, Zach enjoys creating music, hiking, and exercising.
